Artist StatementMy body of work consists primarily of drawings in ink, pencil, and charcoal, as well as paintings in oil and Sumi ink, and the occasional sculpture built with wood, metal, or common objects. A piece usually begins with a word, thought, feeling, or concept that I connect with another and then begin generating representations that are meditative, beautiful, often complex and detailed yet simple. This is the result of taking a simple shape or pair of lines and repetitively layering it on the paper. In my drawings, the space of a page is an infinitely deep realm where I make art about subject matters such as time, space, existence, trauma, infinity, insanity, interconnectivity, and paradoxes. In my current work, Unraveling (mark 2), I use two hand drawn lines in black ink to create a thin looping track that grows and covers the surface of the paper, technically descending deeper under itself. The work is process based and guided by my intuition, resulting in a dense directionless web of curling lines that is both overwhelming and engaging to the viewer. Meaning is often ambiguous and open ended in my artworks; I am more focused on the multilayered creation process and the unique experience of each individual as they encounter my expressions. In this way, the meaning of the work is boundless and open to reflection and interpretation by the viewer.
